ADVANTAGES
Vitamin B2 Facts & Knowledge
Supply in Germany according to the National Consumption Study II: 20% of men and 26% of women do not reach the recommended daily intake of vitamin B2 [8].
VITAMIN B2 AND ITS FUNCTIONS [4, 6]
- Riboflavin is water-soluble. In food, it occurs naturally as free riboflavin and mainly in the form of the biologically active derivatives FMN and FAD.
- Riboflavin is an integral component of the coenzymes FAD and FMN.
- FAD and FMN act as proton carriers in redox reactions in energy metabolism in metabolic pathways and in the formation of some vitamins and coenzymes.
- FAD is also used as a cofactor in the folate cycle
- FAD is involved in the remethylation of homocysteine to methionine.
- FAD supports the production of glutathione to reduce oxidative stress.
VITAMIN B2 DURING PREGNANCY
- Adequate riboflavin intake reduces the risk of pregnancy-associated complications such as preeclampsia [9], eclampsia and cardiac malformations [7]
- B2 is one of the potentially critical nutrients in a plant-based diet [1, 5].
ACCEPTED HEALTH CLAIMS
- Riboflavin contributes to normal energy metabolism
- Riboflavin contributes to the normal functioning of the nervous system
- Riboflavin contributes to the maintenance of normal mucous membranes
- Riboflavin contributes to the maintenance of normal red blood cells
- Riboflavin contributes to the maintenance of normal skin
- Riboflavin contributes to the maintenance of normal vision
- Riboflavin contributes to a
normal iron metabolism
at - Riboflavin helps protect cells from oxidative stress
- Riboflavin helps reduce tiredness and fatigue
PLANT-BASED DIET
The most important sources of vitamin B2 in Germany are milk and dairy products: In a primarily plant-based diet, vitamin B2 therefore also becomes a critical nutrient. Studies show that vegans have a poorer supply of vitamin B2 than those who eat mixed diets [2].

Note: EGRac is considered the gold standard for measuring riboflavin biomarker status [4, 5].
