biomarkers

Note: Relative dose response test (RDR test (in %)) = [(serum retinol concentration five hours after administration of 3000IU retinol – serum retinol concentration at baseline)/serum retinol concentration five hours after administration] × 100 [5, 6].

  • Changes in the serum concentration of retinol in the blood are only to be expected in the case of severe deficiency. Therefore, a blood analysis is hardly suitable for checking the supply (especially in the last trimester of pregnancy and in cases of inflammation)[5].
  • The RDR test is considered a valid test for determining inadequate vitamin A status [5, 6].
RDR value > 20%

indicates a vitamin A deficiency

RDR value < 20%

indicates sufficient vitamin A storage in the liver [5, 6]
