Magnesium Facts & Knowledge
Supply in Germany according to the National Consumption Study II: 26% of men and 29% of women do not reach the recommended daily intake of magnesium [11].
MAGNESIUM AND ITS FUNCTIONS [9, 10, 12]
- Magnesium is a cofactor in over 300 enzymatic reactions in the body.
- It acts either on the substrate or on the enzyme itself, both as a structural and catalytic component.
- Through its involvement in ATP utilization, magnesium is essential in intermediary metabolism for the synthesis of carbohydrates, lipids, nucleic acids and proteins.
- It plays an important role in various organs such as the neuromuscular or cardiovascular system.
- Magnesium can interfere with calcium at the membrane level or bind to membrane phospholipids, thereby modulating membrane permeability and electrical properties.
- In addition, magnesium influences bone health by participating in the structure of hydroxyapatite crystals in bone.
MAGNESIUM DURING PREGNANCY
- Magnesium is used in the treatment of pregnancy poisoning or increased uterine activity [1, 2].
- German-speaking countries (DA-CH, 2015) found that the fetus absorbs 5-7.5 mg of magnesium per day during the third trimester. Taking into account absorption efficiency, it was estimated that an additional magnesium intake of 80-90 mg per day is required to compensate for this loss.

NUTRILAB'S MAGNESIUM
- Our branded raw material Magnesiumbisglycinate ChelatTaste-Free™ from Albion® Minerals is supported by clinical studies and convinces with its quality [9].
- The magnesium in Albion® Minerals is bound to two glycine molecules, which ensures better tolerance and easier absorption in the gastrointestinal tract.
biomarkers
Note: The magnesium concentration in serum varies within a narrow range. These values were defined based on data from the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey I (5th and 95th percentiles): values below 0.75 mmol/L indicate a magnesium deficiency and values above 0.96 mmol/L indicate excessive intake.
However, it has also been pointed out that a serum magnesium concentration within this range does not completely exclude the possibility of magnesium deficiency. Although serum/plasma magnesium concentration is the most commonly used biomarker for magnesium, the usefulness of serum/plasma magnesium concentration as a marker of intake or status is still questionable [9].
0.75 - 0.96 mmol/L

COLLEAGUES
